ACHIEVEMENTS

Since its foundation the Parnell Society of Ireland maintains the memory and political legacy of the Parnell family through a number of activities outside the annual Parnell Summer School and Spring Day lectures. To date the Society has been directly responsible for the following events:

  • Memorial tree planting at Avondale Co Wicklow.
  • Unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the former Steyning Registry Office (near Brighton) where Charles Stewart and Katharine Parnell were married.
  • Erection of a memorial stone from Avondale Co Wicklow over the grave of the patriot Fanny Parnell in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Boston, U.S.A.
  • Establishment of the John Howard Parnell Memorial Garden Park in Valley, Alabama U.S.A.
  • Presentation of a Parnell commemorative tablet for the John Howard Memorial Garden.
  • Donations of Parnell related material to the Cobb Memorial Archive, Lafayette Alabama.
  • Donations to the Cincinnati City Library of the complete transcripts of Charles Stewart Parnell’s visit to Cincinnati in 1880.
  • Erection of memorial plaque and restoration of the grave of the patriot Anna Parnell in Ilfracombe. North Devon
  • Presentation of Parnell-related portfolio of papers to Ilfracombe Public Library
  • Planting of memorial tree to Anna Parnell at Ilfracombe Parish Church
  • Restoration of the grave of Katharine Parnell and placing of commemorative plaque on the grave at Littlehampton, Sussex.
  • Commissioning of commemorative white rose known as the ‘Katharine Parnell Rose’
  • Presentation of portfolio of Parnell-related material to Brighton and Hove City Library.
  • Memorial tree planting at Royal Blackheath Golf Club (club grounds near former residence of Charles Stewart & Katharine Parnell).
  • Presentation of historical papers portfolio concerning the Wood family (Katharine Parnell’s family) to Royal Blackheath Golf Club History
  • Address by John McDonald M.P in Committee Room 15 of the House of Commons to the Parnell Society
  • Retracing of the funeral route of Charles Stewart Parnell through Dublin.
  • Presentation of the official press transcripts of the Parnell funeral to Dublin City Archives.
  • Presentation of Parnell related publications to the Irish Embassy, Paris
