‘The March of the Nation’
The ‘march of the nation’ is often encapsulated in key texts – speeches, manifestos or proclamations. The Parnell Spring Day 2010 will focus on a number of such documents including Parnell’s famous 1885 Cork speech (‘No man has the right to set the boundary to the march of a nation’), his manifesto to the Irish people from 1890, and the 1916 Proclamation. By way of contrast, Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Gettysburg Address will also be examined.
In each case, speakers including Supreme Court Judge Adrian Hardiman, lawyer Joe Buckley and historians Donal McCartney and Pauric Travers will explore these texts, their context and importance.
Advance booking is advisable.
Fee: €35 (including coffee and lunch)
